2008 -- #5 Funny Games U.S.

#5 Funny Games U.S.
Starring Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet
Directed by Michael Haneke
From Warner Independent
Might Be Released on March 14th um... today

And this, ladies and gentleman, is the most perplexing movie I've ever wanted to rlllllly see.

I have yet to see the original, and honestly, I don't want to. I hated the only film of Michael Haneke's I've seen, Caché. And, when I say hate, I mean HATE. It would probably dissolve if I ever see it again, but it's too fun hating something with all your being.

Naomi Watts is easily one of my favorite actresses of all time, and she has two performances (that'd be Ann Darrow and Betty/Diane) that would be in a list of my 25 favorite performances of all time (the latter might just be in the top 5). I really do love her. But I think, somewhere deep down inside, I have this freaky desire to watch her being tortured. It... intrigues me way too much. I have issues. And I love them. Which just makes make issues... it's cyclical! [broods]

But I think the major thing is that fucking trailer.

FUCKING

CHILLS

It actually makes me foam at the mouth. The adjectives! The adjectives! The adjectives! The adjectives!

Brilliant.

It's nowhere near wide this weekend (not surprising), but it's still in my area, and I think, with enough bribery, coercion and flat-out begging, I might see it this week. Ya never know...

Anon: I gave it a C, and for me, that usually equals hate.

Nick: Can't wait to read it. :)

Michael: I think I'd be scared too...

If you really love Naomi Watts you won't put yourself through watching her be tortured like she surely will be here if the original is anything to go by.

This one is going to suck ass. It will never ever measure up to the original. Any film buff worth his salt will see the original before this comes out.

Once again I sounded like a pompus ass in my previous comment. I apologize.

In other news Laura Linney is one damn fine looking woman, she looks incredible in the John Adams mini series on HBO and she's not even wearing make up. Hubba hubba. Oh yeah, she can act pretty good too.

Naomie Watts has a knack for the freaky-deeky flicks.

This is an English version remake of the 1997 German Funny Games, by the very same director Michael Haneke. Haneke wanted his original film to reach a broader audience, especially America since his inspiration for the film was his fascination with America's desensitized appetite for gore and violent torture. The premise is very simple: a well-to-do American family, George (Tim Roth), Ann (Naomi Watts), and Georgie (Devon Gearhart), arrive at their summer home for a relaxing vacation and are held hostage in their own home by two deranged young men, Paul (Michael Pitt) and Peter (Brady Corbet), who play a "game" with the family that consists of tormenting the family physically and psychologically.
